UK legal case: University of Bristol vs Abrahart legal case
In the case of The University of Bristol versus Dr Robert Abrahart, the UK High Court ruled that the university failed to make reasonable adjustments for a Physics student studying at the university. This ruling has significant implications for higher education institutions in their duty to accommodate students with disabilities.
The Advice note states that “compliance with the law” requires universities to, amongst other things: Ensure all staff are trained on their duties under the Equality Act 2010; Train “Student-facing staff … to recognise symptoms of mental health crises; and, Put in place escalation procedures where staff fail to put in place reasonable adjustments and an assessment is imminent. It should be possible for staff or students to implement these procedures.
