IPEd Workshop: Accessibility in action - Creating useful image descriptions

Thu 17 Oct 2024 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm AEDT

Online

Event details

This workshop will be presented by IPEd (Institute of Professional Editors).

Without image descriptions (alt text), people using assistive technologies to read have no way of knowing what an image is of. In this 2-hour workshop, presented by Julie Ganner AE (freelance editor), you will learn how to create image descriptions that are accurate and useful. Julie will guide you through the steps involved in creating good alt text, what to include (and leave out), and what to look out for when describing different types of illustrations. You will also evaluate and discuss some examples, and practice creating descriptions of your own.

Presenter

Julie Ganner AE is a freelance editor with over 30 years’ experience in the book publishing industry, and a lecturer in editing and proofreading for the Master of Publishing at The University of Sydney. Julie chaired IPEd’s Accessibility Initiative Working Party (AIWP) and was IPEd’s representative to the Australian Inclusive Publishing Initiative (AIPI), a cross-industry forum on print accessibility. She is co-author of Books without barriers: a practical guide to inclusive publishing (2023) and Inclusive publishing in Australia: an introductory guide (2019). Both guides are available for free download in a choice of formats.
