Event details
All members of the UWA community and general public are invited to attend this free lecture hosted by The UWA Disability Access and Inclusion Working Group to celebrate the 2024 International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD). Professor Paul Harpur (OAM) is an ARC Future Fellow at the TC Beirne School of Law and the University of Queensland.
This lecture will show how universities can become disability champions of change, drawing from Professor Harpur’s vast experience, sector best practice, and pending regulatory reforms.
In 2006, the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities swept in a new disability equality paradigm. This paradigm transformed what was required from the State and universities regarding the delivery of higher education, the employment of staff, and the creation of research and innovation. This new paradigm is reflected in the Sustainable Development Goals, Australia’s Disability Royal Commission and in reform agendas championed by government and by universities themselves.
There are increasingly conscious efforts to combat ableism in the academy and to combat the disabling barriers preventing equal access to the higher education sector. Universities collectively train over 144,000 students with a disability and employ tens of thousands of staff with disabilities. There are many positive examples of persons with disabilities being empowered and resourced to combine their subject matter expertise and their skills as professors and executives to realise change. Such change benefits the higher education sector and the communities we serve.
