Strategic Review of the Australian Apprenticeship Incentive System – Fact sheet for apprentices with disability
The Australian Government has released its Final Report on the Strategic Review of the Australian Apprenticeship Incentive System. The associated 'Fact sheet for apprentices with disability' provides an in-depth review of the Australian Apprenticeship Incentive System, focusing on its effectiveness in supporting apprentices with disability. Despite apprenticeships offering valuable pathways to employment and financial security, people with disability remain significantly underrepresented -accounting for just 3.4% of all apprentices compared to higher rates in the general working population.
The report highlights systemic barriers, including discriminatory attitudes, low expectations from educators and employers, and a lack of understanding around reasonable workplace adjustments. Additionally, apprentices with disability often face challenges in disclosing their condition due to fears of stigma, which limits their access to necessary support.
The report identifies key structural issues, such as insufficient employer incentives, cultural barriers within workplaces, and gaps in support from training providers. To address these, it recommends actions like enhancing employer accountability for inclusive practices, expanding pathways into apprenticeships for people with disability, and significantly increasing financial support for employers. By focusing on these areas, the report aims to create a more equitable apprenticeship system that supports both social inclusion and economic participation for people with disability.
