Having a learner who is deaf or hard of hearing in the classroom often brings up questions like: How will we communicate? How do I adapt my assessments? What if there’s an emergency?
This free webinar will provide practical strategies for ensuring learners who are deaf or hard of hearing connect, participate and thrive in an educational environment.
Topics covered include:
- Demystifying some of the terminology around deafness and hearing loss
- An introduction to Deaf Culture, including Auslan (Australian Sign Language)
- Communication strategies for the classroom
- Working with Auslan interpreters and notetakers
- English literacy and why this may be a challenge for some learners.
By the end of this webinar, participants will have an understanding of:
- the diversity of communication options used by deaf and hard of hearing learners
- the practical strategies participants can implement to support learners in their classroom, including how to work with Auslan interpreters
- the information and support services available to assist you in your teaching role, including literacy support.
Audience: VET teachers and educators, management and administration staff. In particular, teachers and disability access workers who have little or no experience of working with Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students.
This webinar will be presented simultaneously in both Auslan (sign language) and verbally interpreted in English.
